The Last Five Years is a stirring musical that recounts the five-year experiences of two twenty-something New Yorkers as they ride the emotional rollercoaster we call love. Cathy’s story begins at the moment of breakup—when it’s clear her dreams of a fairy-tale romance have ended in wrenching heartache. Jamie’s story begins with the couple’s idyllic meeting, and ends with his wondering when it all went wrong.
Their stories only intertwine at the pinnacle of their relationship—the wedding. Within this intimate musical, audience members often seem to serve as cast members themselves—privy to details that might only be shared between best friends. Love becomes singular moments of naked vulnerability, barely suppressed anger, deeply felt joy, inexorable sadness and finally, radical acceptance.
The Last Five Years offers a moving picture of how easy it is to fall in love and how painful it can be to fall out of it. A Drama Desk Winner, Jason Robert Brown’s musical premiered in 2001 and was revived Off-Broadway in 2013 at Second Stage. AMTC is proud to share its own production at the Gold Room in the Grand Eastonian in October.
The Last Five Years
